Skateboarding lessons for the kids, maybe me as well

Have you ever tried skateboarding lessons? My youngest son, Ollie, wanted a skateboard for his birthday. Which I thought was great. He was six and wanted to learn something new.

I got him one and some pads with which he was over the moon. We took a trip down to the local skatepark (Potters bar) with all the protective gear on. And I watched him fall over about 20 times and stand still when he wasn’t.

I roller skate to a very high standard, but I can’t skateboard for my life. We attempted this display of torture for a while until he got bored of falling over and didn’t mention going to the skatepark anymore.

Time to bring on the skateboarding lessons

Eight months had passed, and he mentioned going skateboarding again. Then I remember a conversation I had with a friend about skateboarding lessons. So I headed to google the shit out of it and found the nearest place to have skateboarding lessons. I wanted a place inside, as it’s January in the UK.

I came across ABC skateboarding in St Albans. They run lessons for all ages, from beginner to advanced and in all age groups.

I messaged them as my eldest son also wanted to do it, and he was just in the higher age group, but they wanted to go together.

They replied and let them both be in the same age group, which helped me out being a single dad.

They have just finished their five sessions block of lessons, and I can see them improving. The team at ABC skateboarding lessons are great. The boys are much more confident on the board and in themselves, as you can see them get excited they are learning something new.

We will definitely be booking another course. They are not ready for the improver class yet. Still, after another beginner lesson block, they might be.

They are now bugging me to get involved and learn to skateboard. Since I have lost three stone and feel much fitter in myself than I used to, I am warming to the idea of It.

Maybe Alex can give me a one-on-one session as we used to play skater hockey together.

Give it another round of them having skateboarding lessons, and I might overcome my fear.
